Welcome Cardinal Tobin!

by Linda Rowe-Gray, St. Gabriel's Parishioner

On November 29th at 7:30 pm the Parishes of Deanery 1 were invited to a Mass held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Oakland, NJ to meet our new Archbishop, Joseph Cardinal Tobin. Since his coming to the Archdiocese, Cardinal Tobin has been visiting all the deaneries in the Archdiocese as a way of getting to know the people and Priests he has been called to serve. The Parishioners of St. Gabriel the Archangel were invited to the Mass which was very well-attended. All the pews were full and a lovely reception followed with a time to meet with Cardinal Tobin for a question and answer session. Cardinal Tobin was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1952, the oldest of thirteen children. He was ordained a Priest on June 1, 1978 and was appointed the parochial vicar of Holy Redeemer Parish in Detroit. He was later named pastor there, serving from 1984 to 1990. From 1990 to 1991, he served as Pastor of St. Alphonsus Parish in Chicago, Illinois. Cardinal Tobin was elected General Consulter of the Redemptorist Fathers in 1991 and on September 9, 1997, was elected Superior General, being confirmed for another term in this post in 2003. The same year, he became Vice-President of the Union of Superiors General. In 2005, Cardinal Tobin participated in a Synod of Bishops in Rome, where he spent a week in a Spanish-language discussion group that included the Archbishop of Buenos Aires, who later became our much beloved Pope Francis. On October 9, 2016 Pope Francis announced Tobin would be made a Cardinal in a papal consistory held November 19, 2016. Cardinal Tobin has been the Archbishop of Newark, New Jersey, since his installationon January 6, 2017. Welcome Cardinal Tobin!
